Prep highlights: Union boys have to rally to beat Skyview

The Union boys basketball team had to battle to keep its league record perfect, but a strong fourth quarter led the Titans to a 63-52 win over Skyview on Friday. Battling back from an early 14-5 deficit, Colton Looney rallied Skyview with 13 points in the seond quarter. The Storm would take a 44-41 late in the third quarter before Union forced two turnovers and converted them into points to take a 45-44 lead into the fourth. The Titans’ defense then clamped down on Skyview, and Union pulled away. Yanni Fassillis led Union with 19 points, and Bryson Metz added 16. The Titans will try to clinch the 4A Greater St. Helens League title with a win at Camas on Tuesday. Looney had 24 points to lead Skyview, which will be the No. 3 seed to next week’s bi-district tournament.
Boys basketball MOUNTAIN VIEW 72, HERITAGE 53 — Mahkarhi Bolds scored 18 points, and Isaiah Vargas had 12 ofh is 17 points in a big third quarter as the Thunder pulled away. The win, coupled with Kelso’s win over Evergreen, clinched the No. 2 seed to the 3A bi-district tournament for the Thunder. Jacob Martin added 12 points for Mountain View. Kahli West led Heritage 13. PRAIRIE 62, BATTLE GROUND 45 — Hayden Rose had 30 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Falcons to a rivalry win. Brendan Carter his three of his four 3-pointers in the second quarter and finished with 14 points for Prairie. Noah Currie and Todd Cooper had 10 points each for Battle Ground. WOODLAND 69, HUDSON’S BAY 45 — Senior Cole Logan was given the green light to take a 3-point shot, something he doesn’t attempt, and he made it to start the game as the Beavers went on to beat the visiting Eagles.
“He wanted to do it, and I said maybe if we are up later, but the team rallied around the idea,” Woodland coach Jesse Buck said. “And that set the tone.” Logan finished with 17 points. Teammate Beau Swett had 19 points and 11 assists, and Gus Heidgerken added 13 points. Joey Gordon of Hudson’s Bay led all scorers with 25 points. CASTLE ROCK 62, COLUMBIA-WHITE SALMON 33 — On Senior Night, the seniors got the Rockets off to a hot start and helped them secure the No. 3 seed to the 1A district tournament. Seniors Connor Harris, Hayden Curtiss, Chance Naugle, Landon Gardner and Adam Partridge started and played the whole first quarter as the Rockets jumped out to a 24-4 lead. “We decided that hey, these guys have earned this moment,” Castle Rock coach Hayden Tilton said. “And guys like Hayden Curtiss and Connor Harris aren’t heralded in the box score, but their great teammates with great attitudes. And in those first five minutes, it was like every shot was going in.”
Adam Partridge finished with a game-high 21 points, while Lane Partridge and James Montgomery added 12 each. Carson Lanz had 11 for Columbia-White Salmon, and Porter Haskell added 10. Girls basketball SKYVIEW 53, UNION 28 — Jordan Labrador-Hallett scored 17 points and Lainey Phillips added 12 as Skyview locked up the No. 2 seed to the 4A bi-district tournament. Annelise Carroll added 11 points for the Storm, who will host a bi-district game next week. Union, which was led by Mariah Gahl’s nine points, will be the No. 3 seed to the bi-district tournament. MOUNTAIN VIEW 48, FORT VANCOUVER 31 — Victoria Schneider scored 22, Katelyn Henderson had 12 and Nina Peterson added 11 as the Thunder won a non-league game. Trian Clark led Fort with 10 points.
