A man from Happy Valley, Ore., is accused of attacking residents of a central Vancouver apartment complex Wednesday night and holding one of them hostage with a lighter against his neck. Alvin Henri Duane Hudson, 30, appeared Thursday in Clark County Superior Court on suspicion of second-degree assault, first-degree kidnapping, second-degree burglary, fourth-degree assault, and harassment with a previous conviction or threat to kill. A jail pre-booking sheet indicates Hudson has “known, stated or observed mental health problems.” His bail was set at $75,000, and he is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 23, court records show. Vancouver police responded at 9:25 p.m. to the Timber Apartments at 2519 E. Mill Plain Blvd. A woman who lives there told police a man, later identified as Hudson, approached her apartment screaming obscenities. He then punched her in the face, knocking her unconscious, according to police spokeswoman Kim Kapp. Hudson then grabbed the woman’s husband by the throat and forced him into the building manager’s office, Kapp said in an email. Kapp said he appeared to have a weapon that was possibly a knife.

Officers saw Hudson inside the unit with a man in a “hostage-style hold” with the victim’s body in front of his and his left arm wrapped around the victim’s neck, a probable cause affidavit states. Hudson came outside with the man still in a chokehold, according to court records. Officers were able to convince Hudson to let go of him. The man told police Hudson burst into his apartment yelling racial slurs and telling him he was going to kill him, the affidavit states. The woman was taken to an area hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening. The man was not seriously injured, Kapp said. Police determined the item Hudson was holding against the man’s neck was a lighter.
