Every Saturday this February local nonprofit iUrban Teen, in partnership with the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington, will host an event to celebrate Black History Month. Each event will highlight local Black artists and community members. “It’s of special significance when we have a dedicated time to honor the talents in our community,” said Deena Pierott, founder and executive director of iUrban Teen. “It’s a month to honor and celebrate.” A meet-the-author book talk and signing, with D’Norgia Taylor and Mario Depriest, will kick off the month on Feb. 4. Books will be available to purchase at the event. The following Saturday, Feb. 11, a poetry and spoken word performance will take place with Latoya Hampton and Darlene Solomon-Rogers. On Feb. 18, Black physicians will lead sessions focused on Black health and wellness — including advice on warning signs and how to advocate for yourself, according to the invitation. The month of celebration will conclude on Feb. 25 with a gallery showing, displaying the works of local Black artists. Each event is free to the public and will be held at 808 Harney St. Refreshments will be served. Space is limited for the events and registration is required.
