HAZEL DELL — Jack Fisher, a freshman at King’s Way Christian High School, served as a Senate page at the Washington Senate at the Capitol in Olympia the week of March 6-10. Fisher was sponsored by Sen. Lynda Wilson, R-Vancouver, who represents the 17th Legislative District. The Senate Page Program gives Washington high school students an opportunity to spend the week working in the Legislature. During their time at the Capitol, pages are responsible for transporting documents between offices, as well as delivering mail and messages. Pages often spend time in the Senate chamber when they are not transporting documents. They attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the how a bill becomes a law. During the week, pages work together to draft their own bills and engage in a mock legislative session. “It has been a great week. I have always been interested in politics, so this was a great opportunity to learn more about our government and to see the process firsthand,” Fisher said. During his week as a page, Fisher had an opportunity to work on a mock bill that would allow Washington’s governor to serve only two four-year terms. “I really enjoyed the opportunity to be on the Senate floor and attend committee hearings,” Fisher said.

“I met Jack when he was a youngster, because I’ve known his family for many years — the family business is where I go every December to participate in the Wreaths Across America program. Jack is a very bright young man with a promising future, and it was great that he could come to the Capitol and receive a lesson in civics that can’t be found anywhere else,” Wilson said.
