The Port of Vancouver’s received $601,375 in grant funding to improve water quality for its terminal stormwater facilities and adjacent water bodies, including the Columbia River. Altogether, the Washington Department of Ecology is providing $313 million in grants and loans for communities to address wastewater treatment, sewer systems and polluted stormwater. Officials will design water pretreatment and polishing systems for Terminals 2, 3 and 4, as well as design to relocate and upgrade treatments at Terminal 5’s stormwater lagoons. The Port of Vancouver joined 48 communities and port districts, splitting $56.9 million, that are making improvements to ease pollutants found in stormwater, including tire anti-degradant and polychlorinated biphenyls, both of which are long-lasting chemicals that impair human and environmental health, according to Ecology.
