Letter: Build other bridges first
By Peter L. Williamson, VANCOUVER Published: October 31, 2024, 6:00am
I’ve noted state Highway 14 widening is now open. Traffic delays, safer transitions from Highway 14 to Interstate 205 will be affected. I’ve communicated to the committee in the past concerns regarding I-5 Bridge replacement, with little response. Is the committee not seeing unabated construction of rental property and burgeoning population of Clark County? Historically, we’ve been told that the I-5 Bridge replacement will reduce commute time to Oregon destinations optimally, one minute or thereabout. Would it not make more sense to: 1. Construct a bridge from 192nd Avenue to Troutdale? 2. Construct a lift, swing-span or drawbridge from the Fruit Valley area to the St. John’s industrial area of Portland? I submit that traffic, commercial and other purposes will suffer less disruption during I-5 Bridge replacement and access. I do not dispute the necessity of I-5 Bridge replacement, but suggest two new spans be done first.
