Letter: Light rail has benefits
By Peter Kitchen, VANCOUVER Published: December 28, 2024, 6:00am
A Dec. 19 letter states “Light rail not worth the cost,” (Our Readers’ Views). It is quite pricey, but the writer is basing this assumption on the current situation, which is not commuter-friendly. They state it would serve a small percentage of commuters. No, it would serve all those who take express buses from Park & Ride lots, and all those who drive to the MAX stations at the Delta Park and Gateway stations. Think of that traffic alone not adding to rush hour woes. The writer also thinks it will have “minimal ridership during off-peak hours.” The express buses mainly run only during commuting hours. Having a constant source of transportation during other times would allow more people without a vehicle to have jobs in Portland in something other than the regular 9-to-5 grind. More people here could take jobs in Portland but continue to live here without as much worry about the hours they need to work. The writer says light rail would not have worked for them. Many have to drive to a MAX station since the express buses don’t match their hours. That issue will be gone. If you build it, they will come.
