VANCOUVER — After a rocky start to its season, I.F. Robotics was ready for Watt Interleagues on Dec. 14. The team’s robot was solid. Members spoke about their outreach across the Vancouver community and how they connected with local technical companies including Protech Composites, Applied Motion, Mean Machine, Columbia/Okura, HP, Concept Reality, Intel, Bonneville Power and DZ & Family Machineworks. Then, the competition began. After winning every match, and an impressive Level 3 Climb, it came to the finale. The dual alliance of I.F. Robotics and Adna Robotics scored 343 points, the highest-scoring match in Washington and fifth best in the world. This also secured I.F. Robotics and Adna’s victory as the winning alliance for Watt Interleague, which represents regional 34 teams. I.F. Robotics also won the Inspire Award for being the best overall team at Watt Interleagues, and had the best OPR (Offensive Power Rating) in the world. The team has five current members: Micah Hwang (team captain), Wyatt Howard, Jacob Ouelette, Daniel Tsay and Venus Payne. The team was co-founded by Micah Hwang and his older sister, Acacia Hwang, who is now a freshman in computer engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. In addition, I.F. Robotics proactively does STEM outreach and has demonstrated their robot to their surrounding community, including at Esther Short Park, the Clark County Fair, OMSI, Eisenhower Elementary School, Open House Ministries and to Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle.
