YAKIMA — The Seton Catholic girls basketball team gave credit where credit was due. Making the program’s debut appearance at the Yakima SunDome for the Class 1A state quarterfinals, the No. 6 seed Cougars ran into a buzzsaw in the form of No. 5 Annie Wright, which led for all but three minutes in an ultimate 48-39 win Thursday. The Gators held the Cougars to 13 for 58 (22.4 percent) shooting from the field and used a balanced scoring attack with 22 points in the paint led by Camille Bates (19 points) and Aaliyeh Martin (10 points, 10 rebounds) to snap Seton’s 17-game win streak. The Cougars dropped to the consolation side of the bracket. “Number one, hats off to them,” Seton Catholic coach Phil Kent said. “Outstanding team, super athletic, really well coached and Annie Wright played to their identity. That’s their style of play — hard-nosed defense, attack the paint — and they did that really well.” Riley Seymer led Seton Catholic with 16 points, 14 rebounds and four steals. The junior scored five straight points to start the second half that trimmed the Gators’ lead to 30-27.
The run was short-lived. Annie Wright countered with seven straight points to take a double-digit lead. The Gators’ defense, primarily utilizing a 1-2-2 zone, limited the Cougars to three field goals in the second half. Madison Lee added 10 points for Seton. “We went out there and played hard,” Seymer said. “We knew this team was going to be a tough team — they were a tough team, they were a very aggressive team. We got a feel for the court, we definitely didn’t get the outcome we wanted, but, going into tomorrow and (being) ready, it was just a good experience. It’s just setting us up for a better opportunity in the long run.” Seton Catholic will face Naches Valley in Friday’s fourth-place semifinals at 10:30 a.m. The Cougars have already accomplished a program first by reaching the dome, and can add another feat with a state trophy still in play. “The biggest message was, (the loss) doesn’t identify our season, our success this year,” Kent said. “We got more basketball to play tomorrow, and we’re going to go as far as we can.”
