Letter: Perez must listen to constituents
On March 7, I received a letter from Congresswoman Perez responding to my concerns about the chain saw tactics of the Department of Government Efficiency. What I got was a defense of DOGE. She assured me that DOGE was only an advisory commission. However, if that’s true, why have thousands of public servants been fired without congressional approval? She also appeared to have no issues with Elon Musk spearheading DOGE, overlooking his glaring conflicts of interest. Musk has canceled contracts for veterans and farmers while keeping intact all $38 billion of Musk company contracts and subsidies. Finally, the congresswoman maintains DOGE cost-cutting measures are “addressing real concerns of many in the country.” But let’s consider Social Security. Given that Musk has called Social Security a “Ponzi scheme,” there should be no doubt it is on the chopping block. Is this a cost-cutting measure the country really wants? When 61 percent of Americans are willing to raise taxes to preserve benefits, the answer is no. Letters are much appreciated, but constituents deserve a town hall. The urgency of the time demands it.
