Letter: Lane changes don’t add up

Just read the article on the lane-reduction plan for the school zone area of Northwest 139th Street (“139th Street project that removes lane in front of schools has Salmon Creek residents worried,” The Columbian, March 19). Safety was the apparent impetus for this plan. I drive there many times a week. I have never seen an accident. I have been caught in the after-school westbound lane blockage by the cars waiting to pick up students. This project appears to duplicate the lane reduction by the city on Fourth Plain with the bus-only lanes. I try to be respectful and stay in my lane but am jealous of the many drivers who use the bus lane to get to their destination with limited interruption. I’d be interested in seeing the accident study and traffic count numbers that make this project viable. I do wonder if this is a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.
