Letter: Keep parking payments accessible
I recently delivered letters to Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle and to the city council members regarding an editorial in The Columbian that included the statement, “Another concern is that coin-operated pay stations will be phased out in favor of payment apps, limiting parking accessibility to those who have smartphones.” When I dropped off the letters, I was told that a staff person would reply to me. In fact, McEnerny-Ogle emailed me, and she did so late in the evening, which impressed me. She also went out to check on my concern about Parking Kitty signs going up around town with no alternative for payment by cash or even credit card. I do not want my credit card on my phone, because of hacking. People who don’t have smartphones or credit cards need to park without breaking local laws. After looking into the issue, Mayor McEnerny-Ogle wrote in an email that she agreed with me, and that she “shared the same concern with the city manager.” I hope Vancouver will keep coin payment for parking as an alternative instead of requiring a smartphone and app.
