Letter: Light rail on I-5 Bridge makes sense
On March 22, Leslie Lewallen writes “Light rail on I-5 Bridge doesn’t make sense” (Local View, The Columbian). Actually, yes it does. Lewallen states that transit use would increase by less than 1 percent. So? If you look at the Delta Park and Gateway Park & Ride lots on any business day, the vehicles are overwhelmingly from Washington. If light rail came across the bridge, none of those cars would be there. They would park in Vancouver, taking hundreds of vehicles out of the morning commute. Less traffic plus less pollution is a double win. Lewallen states that business is leaving Portland. And yet thousands still commute there every day. She bemoans the fact that it’s “fixed rail,” but when accidents and daily traffic jams happen, it’s good that light rail has a dedicated space. Others state that the express buses go to Portland. Yes, but only during typical office hours. If you work late or have a job with different hours or end up working overtime, you’re out of luck. Light rail is available many more times. It would be a great help to our friends and neighbors who work nonoffice and nontraditional jobs.
