Letter: Examine causes of national debt

A March 22 letter to the editor (“Keep focus on national debt,” Our Readers’ Views) writes about the $36 trillion national debt and prejudicial Associated Press coverage of the current regime and, I presume, DOGE and Elon Musk. Google “Congressional Budget Office cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.” Try “Causes of U.S. national debt over time.” How about “Changes in the net worth of the top 1 percent of individuals in the last 50 years”? Google “What were the federal tax brackets in 1960?” How about an Investopedia article “U.S. Debt by President: Dollar and Percentage” by Hiranmayi Srinivasan, Feb. 8, 2025? This work also gets into the decisions behind those more recent contributors to the debt growth. Please do not skip President Ronald Reagan’s role in this as he raised every “fee” that his minions could find to avoid the dreaded “tax” word that kept his “tax cutter” character Oscar worthy. It would seem that the “supply-side economics” label was more correctly described as “voodoo economics” by a Republican rival who eventually won his presidential term.
