Vancouver firefighters battle blaze in ship loader at the Port of Vancouver
No one was injured in the fire at United Grain; cause under investigation
Vancouver firefighters battled a grain fire Wednesday afternoon at the Port of Vancouver, staying on scene for more than five hours. The Vancouver Fire Department was called to United Grain, 1905 N.W. Harborside Drive at the port, about 4:40 p.m. for a report of a small grain fire, according to an agency statement. They found smoke and flames coming from a ship loader that transfers grain. Some 30 firefighters, assisted by the Vancouver Fire Boat on the Columbia River and crews from Clark County Fire District 6, removed the grain from the loader and extinguished the blaze. “Firefighters safely accessed smoldering grain located within the grain loader by creating additional access points in the elevator to facilitate the controlled removal of grain to the ground,” according to the statement.
Firefighters were on scene for a total of five hours and 36 minutes. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office.
